Beware of SIM card cloning missed calls

Beware of SIM card cloning missed calls!

Earlier, we reported about the missed calls from +375. Many subscribers were getting missed calls from numbers starting with +375. When they tried calling back, they were charged Rs 15 to Rs 30. Following this, there were many rumors.
One of it stated that if you call back, you will not only be charged for making an international call but also lose the data stored on your phone such as credit card and bank details. This was denied by an IT expert claiming that it is not possible to copy the bank details without hacking the device.
Now, there seems to be a trend of cloning SIM cards simply by giving missed calls. If you get missed calls from numbers starting with #90, +92 or #09, do not call back as your SIM card will be cloned. As per reports, over one lakh subscribers have become victims of this new telecom menace.
What if you answer the call before the caller dropped it? The caller on the other end poses as a call center representative and claims that it is for verifying the call flow and connectivity. You will then be asked to press #90 or #09 to call back in order to ensure if the connectivity is seamless.
What happens if your SIM card is cloned? Those behind this can misuse the data that is stored on your phone or external memory. They can use your number to make calls to any number they want to. Finally, you will land up in ending up your connection as it is used for terror calls.
Telecom operators like BSNL have issued alerts to the broadband users. They are sending SMS alerts to the subscribers as well. However, the crooks may use different numbers to call. So, it is recommended that you do not respond to calls made from unusual numbers. It is also suggested that you do not save sensitive details like ATM/credit/debit card numbers, bank details and passwords on the phone memoryas it can be tracked by such crooks.
